Earthquake hits China. Twitter reports first.

Twitter seems to be the first site that has news of the 6 to 7.5 magnitude earthquake that hit China this morning.  Another example of how the power of microblogging can socially compute information and news faster than the media can. I was just about to go to sleep when I checked my twitter page one last time.  I had a double take when I see that @scobleizer tweeted about followers of his tweeting about a 7.8m earthquake near Chengdu,  China a city of 11 million. Thanks to Robert Scoble for helping a lot of people stay tuned into to what is going on in China.

It is amazing to see Twitter at work. In minutes we can all start monitoring all the chatter around the story on www.tweetscan.com, www.friendfeed.comwww.quotably.com and www.summize.com.

greggscott peterschloss: “Watched everything sway outside my windows. Hanging lights swayed for a good while. Several buildings downtown BJ emptied out”

another tweet:

frankyu: i twittered as the building swayed…screw running out the door, MUST TWEET !”

and this tweet has video from Beijing:

jjprojects: Earthquake vid: in Beijing, 950 miles away http://tinyurl.com/5vjtmu

None of this is even airing on CNN or any news network that I can find. So far I have seen it on New York Times, the BBC and Hindu.com.

@greggscott has even found the first photo that I have seen.

I hope everyone in China is safe and there aren’t too many casualties.

With that, a goodnight.

Update: Reports of over 9,000 dead so far.

Lots of people on the internet are raising money in support of the recent tragedies. Please visit a charity of your choice and make a donation or visit Jeremiah Owyang’s blog to see how you can use the power of your influence on the internet as well as a list of places you can visit to donate.

Chicago man dies after Taser hit. Watch the video.

I am not jumping to any conclusions as there are still very little details about how this transpired. Watching the video, I can’t tell if it is looped or he is being tased repeatedly. It looks as if he is being tased over and over.

We Fall, We Fall… in the office

We made this video about 2 years ago as an example of a user submitted video lip sync for our company and how easy it was to create.  It took about 15 minutes. This was back when our office was an unfinished basement. I was the puppets BTW, the other two guys are Marc Namm and Rob Spinelli. It’s been a hell of a ride fellas.  We Fall, We Fall. Music by Dead Celebrity Status.

We ended up doing a lip sync contest for one of our artists, Neurosonic. The song is an indictment of Ashlee Simpsons lip sync train wreck on SNL so why not show her how lip syncing should be done? This was the winning video.

Teenage mutant ninja blogger? Digsby.com and Zemanta.com

I downloaded and installed a plug in from Digsby yesterday. It combines all your email including POP and IMAP accounts,  IM accounts, Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter.  What I like about it is that I don’t need to go to any of these pages to see what is going on. I have a bubble that pops up on the upper right hand corner of the screen that shows all updates as they happen. This saves me a ton of time. I find Digsby most useful for twitter. For example, as you follow more tweeple on twitter, so does the volume of tweets coming through. There are varying degrees of weight on each tweet. Some are statements. You read, respond, agree or dissagree to them. Some are subjects linking to a much more in depth discussion of those topics. I’m busy during the day. I don’t have time to dive into these particular tweets but I most certainly do not want to miss out on any information I can gleam from these posts. Having Disgby installed lets me see them in real time and decide what to do with them when they come in. I click the links and then hit the thumbs up button in my navbar for stumbledupon. Then read later. Another cool thing the application for facebook does is add a chat function to my facebook page. BTW Digsby will be available for Mac and Linux soon.

All in all Digsby has potential to enable me to do all my microblogging and social networking in one spot.  If they add friendfeed to the mix they would be cooking with fire though. For facebook and myspace they have all the navigation features for inbox, comments, posts etc but it still launched your browser to use them. I would like if I could do this right through the interface without ever having to visit the sites.

I’ve yet to check out the Fuser application which mashes up your facebook and myspace inbox but will check that out today.

BTW this post was typed using the Zemanta plug in for Firefox.  It studied  my keywords and suggested creative commons licensed images, related links, and video as well as links and tags releated to my post. All I had to do was type and click which piece of content I want linked, tagged or included.  Awesome.

What’s in your blogging toolbox that helps you connect and share more in less time?  Any other tools like Digsby, Fuser, Friendfeed, Zemanta, twitterfox that you suggest?
